10 – Sin in Passover & Unleavened Bread at The Cross

After showing how sin is not even mentioned by God in the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread in Israel’s example or the ceremonial feast system, we take a similar look at the “Historical-Prophetic Time-Line”.

Reconciliation of Some APPARENT Inconsistencies of The Cross

Old & New Covenants

  • What we call the Old & New Testaments do not actually correspond to the two covenants.
  • The ”New Testament” actually continues the Old Covenant up to the cross.
  • Then a transition period from the cross to Pentecost.
  • Then Pentecost is the establishment of the New Covenant with God’s Church.

God’s Work

  • There are actually MANY covenants in the Old Testament, some of which are actually STILL IN EFFECT.
  • Some of these covenants were actually established between God The Father and Jesus Christ as The Word.
  • The Bible is actually continuous, contiguous and connected. There are no “gaps”, but complete continuity and connectedness.
  • My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working. John 5:17 NIV

Sin in Passover & Unleavened Bread at The Cross?

Just as we looked for the concepts of law and sin in Passover and Days of Unleavened Bread in the example of Israel and the ceremonial feast system, we will do the same with the “Historical/Prophetic Time-Line”.

Return to Sin?

  • The traditional COG (and others) meaning of The Days of Unleavened Bread is for us to “Put sin out of our lives”.
  • If leaven represents sin, does it make sense for us to put leaven (“sin”) out of our lives, only to return to eating leaven (“sin”).
  • What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Romans 6:1-2

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:17 NIV

Inconsistent Application

  • In addition to the incorrect view that leaven represents sin, is the inconsistent application of how the meaning of the Days of Unleavened Bread are applied to the individual, instead of the work of Jesus Christ.
  • This inconsistency is not wrong in and of itself. It actually helps us to see that there are individual applications of God’s Feasts.
  • However, how did Jesus Christ actually fulfill the Days of Unleavened Bread in the example of His own life?

De-Leavened at The Cross – Jesus & The Holy Spirit

Birth (Son of Man):

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18 NIV

Baptism (Son of God):

Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:10-11 NIV

At The Cross:

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. Luke 23:46 NIV

Un-Leavened In The Grave

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:40 NIV

Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast… Exodus 34:25 NIV

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. Ecclesiastes 9:10 NIV

For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 NIV

Unleavened bread is the bread of death!

Bread of Life

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. John 6:35 ESV

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever. John 6:58 NIV

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Romans 5:10 NIV

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 NIV

Again!!!…

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:17 NIV

The Wave Sheaf

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” John 20:17 NIV

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. John 15:26 ESV

You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. John 14:28-29 ESV

I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49 NIV

Review

  • Even seemingly insignificant ideas like the separation of the “Old” & “New” “Testaments” can obscure the truth.
  • God is ALWAYS at work. It is continuous and VAST.
  • The idea of sin is not demonstrated in Christ’ fulfillments of Passover or Feast of Unleavened Bread.
  • Instead, He demonstrated that being de-leavened pictures having ALL knowledge removed – for a time.
  • There is an individual fulfillment of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, in our own lives, as with the other feasts (which we will cover later).
