LSU O’Rourke

We had just re-located our LSU O’Rourke late in the 2022 season, which made it susceptible to being killed by the 2022 Arctic Blast. Even though it’s an official LSU variety, we just don’t feel the need to replace it, as we have so many other early and much more flavorful varieties.

LSU O’Rourke Fig Variety Features

  • A common fig type, which does NOT require caprification
  • An official release (2007) of the LSU fig collection
  • From the Celeste fig family
  • Produces a breba crop
  • Very early
  • Produces after die-back
  • Small ostiole
  • Very reliable producer
  • Fast grower
  • Good light brown sugar flavor, with slight berry tones when fully ripe

LSU O’Rourke is a productive brown sugar fig variety, the second earliest ripening LSU cultivar after Improved Celeste. Ripens with the Mt Etnas. Strong smooth brown skin with some maroon.

Though O’Rourke is considered by some to have a tight 2-week window for ripening the main crop, our mother tree produces small to medium-sized figs in waves throughout the summer and early fall.
